January to March 2019

To get on the email list, send an email to juneaumountainclimbers@gmail.com  and with the subject, “Add me to the list.” Announcements come out about once a week from that email address.  Due to weather or other reasons, we make changes to the calendar last minute that sometimes aren’t reflected here but are sent out by email.

January 19.  Winter McGinnis Climb. Carl Reese will lead a climb up Mount McGinnis. This climb has been a Juneau Alpine Club standard for a long time. This climb requires ice axe, crampons, and snowshoes. Backcountry ski gear could also work. It’s a strenuous climb and you should know how to self arrest with an ice axe. Depending upon snow conditions this trip may require beacon, probe, and shovel and an understanding of how to use them.  If you are interested contact Carl (723-9323) before 7PM January 18.

January 26 Soggy weather slog. Dani Evenson will lead a soggy slog up Jumbo (or similar) on Saturday simply because people sometimes need the exercise.   If you are interested contact Dani before 7PM January 25. dani_evenson@yahoo.com West Peak postponed.

February 2 West Peak.Dani Evenson will lead a climb up West Peak.  This climb requires ice axe, crampons, and snowshoes. It’s a strenuous climb in winter and you should know how to self arrest with an ice axe. February 9 Carl Reese is leading  a backcountry ski trip up Ben Stewart or Troy. This trip requires beacon, probe, and shovel and an understanding of how to use them.  If you are interested contact Carl (723-9323) before February 8.

February 16 Open

February 23 Dani Evenson will lead a climb, probably up Mount Jumbo up the regular route and traverse into Dan Moller Basin.   This climb requires ice axe, crampons, and snowshoes.  If you are interested contact Dani  dani_evenson@yahoo.com 

March sometime.  Thunder Traverse. Brian Jackson is leading the Thunder Traverse. This goes up Thunder Mountain starting on the south and continues across and ends at the Mendenhall Visitor Center. It’s an all day trip and gear and expectations will vary upon snow and weather conditions. The views are great.  Contact Brian  for more information and to discuss conditions if interested. This trip was delayed.
