August 2014 calendar

August 7, Thursday night hike. Eaglecrest to the top of the mountain. Meet at the lodge at 6PM.

August 9. Grandchild Peaks hike. Keith Andrews is leading a hike to the Grandchild Peaks. This is a moderate hike that should take 8 hours or so. It does not require technical gear. If you are interested, please contact Keith before 7PM Friday August 8th. 957-6055

August 14. Thursday night hike. Carl is leading bouldering at the Fred Meyer boulders. There are boulders uphill from Freddy’s and people have started climbing them. We are going go up there if the weather doesn’t suck. If you have climbing gear like shoes or crash pads bring it but you don’t need it.

August 17. Ben Stewart to Mount Meek traverse. Carl is leading a traverse across the north end of Douglas Island. The traverse starts at Eaglecrest, climbs Mount Ben Stewart, crosses the ridge line to Mount Meek, and descends a trail to North Douglas Highway. This is a strenuous but non technical climb that will require bushwhacking and route-finding. If you are interested, please contact Carl before 7PM Friday August 15th 723 -9323.

August 21. Thursday night hike. Carl is leading bouldering at the Fred Meyer boulders. There are boulders uphill from Freddy’s and people have started climbing them. If you have climbing gear like shoes or crash pads bring it but you don’t need it.

August 23. Herbert Glacier rock climbing. Carl is leading a trip to climb rocks near the Herbert Glacier. This will require a harness and rock climbing shoes. We are biking in to the Herbert as well. If you are interested, please contact Carl before 7PM Friday August 22nd 723 -9323 . No experience is necessary and we will be top roping.

Labor Day weekend. Kayak and hiking combo to Taku Inlet. We are looking at an overnight trip with two parts and two groups. One group hikes to Taku Inlet by way the Sheep Creek Trail and the ridge line west of Hawthorne Peak and the other group kayaks around Point Bishop to Sunny Cove in the Taku Inlet. The two groups meet, spend the night, and switch roles the following day. This is a strenuous trip that requires kayaking and hiking in areas lacking trails. It will also require those involved to meet prior to the trip to discuss logistics. If you are interested please contact Carl by August 27th. 723-9323.

September 3. Monthly Meeting at the Island Pub. 7:00 PM. We will plan September’s climbs and hikes. All are welcome. Come with ideas or to meet other mountaineering folks.
