May 24. Hawthorne Peak. Carl will lead a climb up Hawthorne Peak. This will require ice axe and crampons and is a difficult climb. Hawthorne Peak is out Thane Road on the south side of Sheep Creek Basin. There are great views from the top. If you are interested, call Carl by 7PM Friday May 23rd.
May 29. Gold Ridge in the evening. Jason Boyle is starting up the Thursday night hikes again. The first hike this year is up Gold Ridge, which is above the tram. This is a show up and go hike. Folks leave the trailhead for Mount Roberts at 6PM May 29th. This is a moderate hike and should last about 3 hours. If you need more info, call Jason at 301 802-3957.
May 31. Herbert Glacier rock climbing. Bike to Herbert Glacier area for some rock climbing. It’s an easy 5 mile ride into the glacier. There are several rock walls in the area and most have scouted but not climbed. Anyone interested can call Carl at 723-9323 by 7PM Friday May 30th. In addition to a bicycle, you will need a harness and climbing shoes. Experience isn’t necessary.
June 2. Ice Axe/self rescue practice. Pete Boyd will be leading an ice axe self arrest practice session on Monday June 2nd at 6 pm. Meet at the Eagle Crest parking lot, plan on a bit of an uphill hike to find a good snow slope. Bring an ice axe and clothes for sliding / rolling around in the snow. June 7.Grandchild Peaks. Bob is leading a trip to the Grandchild Peaks. This is a moderate climb and equipment needed depends upon conditions. If interested call Bob before 7PM Friday June 6th. 500-7950
June 11. Heintzlman Ridge Traverse: Tom Dolan is going to recon a traverse, that could lead as an official trip in a week or two, either tomorrow or the next day (Tuesday or Wednesday) From Thunder Mountain on the ridge for three or four miles, drop down into Goat creek drainage, then through the woods to the Nugget creek drainage and out to the Visitor center. Long day- Ice ax, crampons, real boots. The ridge is pretty easy but below tree line is a bit rough. I flagged it last year so shouldn’t be wandering to bad in the woods.
